It’s been a long, long winter. But the upside is that we’ve had a chance to concoct some red hot photography workshops for you. We have some really interesting studio shoots for you – great for learning new techniques including ones that Michael has used in his commercial/fashion work.
Also we have some fab location shoots. We will be visiting the beautiful Peak District again which is a never ending treasure trove of wonderfully dramatic backdrops. And perhaps most exciting of all, we will be visiting the Far East again – this time the stunningly beautiful islands of Langkawi, Malaysia!
And don’t forget – The Canonball has returned…
Make 2018 your year for photography.
It’s been far too long. But it’s back. The eternal struggle between Canon and Nikon (and the Alternatives) determined by hurling large balls at wooden skittles. The rivalry is immense, the competition beyond intense. The prize is bragging rights for the victorious team, and the utter humiliation of its rivals (only joking, it’s just a bit of fun).
This time we are opening it up to models too so this could be a 4 way battle of epic proportions.
We will be going to Tenpin near the Showcase cinemas in Nottingham and on Thursdays they do a deal which gives us 2 games of bowling plus a sharing food platter and drink for £10.00 each. Please let us know if you are coming asap as we have to book in advance to secure this deal.
Date: Thursday April 19th
Venue: Tenpin Nottingham Clifton Boulevard, Redfield Way Nottingham NG7 2UW
Colour is one of photography’s most powerful tools, but it can be tricky to get right. In this workshop we will show how to use big bold colours, how to harmonize, and most importantly how to give your images that wow factor. This will involve use of colours in backdrops, clothes and makeup. Tips will be given on how to light and get the best from your ‘ingredients’. Michael will show you how he has used these techniques in his work to keep his clients happy.
Actor headshots are a bit of a black art. This form of photography is often inaccessible and a bit of a closed shop. It can also be very specific in terms of expressions, photographic styles, type of clothing worn – and every detail counts. The headshot is very often the first point of contact between the actor and the casting director. Get it right and your sitter has a greater chance of being offered the parts, get it wrong and they may very well get overlooked. It can be THAT crucial and every nuance counts. Michael has created many, many headshots during his career for a wide range of actors and performers. He knows what is required and will be passing on some of this very important information during the workshop. He has worked with stars of film and tv like Rebecca grant (pictured), Johnny vegas, Shobna Gulati and classical actors like David Shackleton (pictured). David will be our model for this workshop and will also give advice from an actor’s point of view.
If you want to add headshot photography to your repertoire this workshop is unmissable.

Great photography is like great cooking. First choose the best ingredients, then put together sensitively with care and skill. All great dishes are created that way. In our case our fine ingredients are the delectable Daniella Allfree who has always been far more than just a walk on darts girl, and the delicious Derbyshire Peak District.
We come here a lot but every time we do we find something amazing to photograph. The scenery is 360 degrees of rugged beauty and the possibilities are endless. Michael will help you with composition, lighting (we bring strobes for certain effects) and how to add the wow factor to your images.
This is a full day trip and transport will be provided.
Date: Thursday May 24th

Working with the wonderful and versatile Alice Katz, we will explore lighting, sets and poses. The difference between creating something cool and sexy and something cliché and tacky is often a fine line. We will show you how to do it right.
Alice is a model with over 3 years experience. Her usual genre is vintage and classic boudoir but when we worked with her before we could tell that she has a lot more than that in her locker. A wonderfully friendly person in real life but capable of some very sultry and moody expressions, Alice can help breathe life into every image we take of her.
Coming up with something to live up to our amazing photo tour of Hong Kong last year was quite a daunting task. But we think we’ve cracked it! Another expedition to the far east, this time our destination is Malaysia – specifically the Langkawi archipelago. Not only do we have the white sandy beaches and palm trees of the coast, we have the iconic hills and the paddy fields of the interior to explore too. If that’s not enough for you, Langkawi is made up of 99 islands which are accessible by boat. And if that’s still not enough for you then Kuala Lumpur is an hour away by plane for those who want a bit more hustle and bustle.
The idea is to mix it up a bit. We will be working with models shooting fashion/swimwear shoots and doing some travel/street photography too. Our guide will be my friend and colleague Sarah Wheeldon who lives there and has provided us with these amazing images. Date-wise we are looking at March/April 2019 and we are looking to spend 10-14 days out there. Sarah has informed me that there are hotels that will suit most budgets out there and the food is cheap and amazing. We also have access to a motor boat for island hopping! And did I tell you that Thailand is just an hour away by boat too?
